Afonso Domingues

AFONSO DOMINGUES

Little is known about this architect.

He was born in Lisbon, at some time midway through the 14th century. After gaining experience working at Lisbon’s Sé Cathedral, he became the first architect of the Monastery of Batalha.

The project and the overseeing of its initial construction are attributed to him, in 1388.

It is thought that he was from a well-to-do family, since he lived in one of the most expensive areas of Lisbon, the parish of Madalena.

To him we owe the original layout of the Monastery, for which he was in charge of construction between 1388 and 1402.

While he did define the plan for most of the temple, he failed to complete the construction work before he died in 1402.
