IGESPAR, IP (Portuguese Architectural Heritage Management Institute) is a public entity that is part of the Ministry of Culture whose mission is to manage, protect, conserve and enhance the architectural and archaeological heritage assets of the Portuguese state.
The fundamental remits of IGESPAR are: the listing and classification of assets of architectural and archaeological interest in Portugal, as well as their respective protection zones; planning works of restoration, conservation and improvement in listed buildings; managing the monuments, building complexes and sites allocated to it; authorising and monitoring interventions in listed buildings or buildings that may be listed and their protection zones; studying, disseminating and enhancing the monuments for which it is responsible; and supervising archaeological activities in the whole Portuguese territory.
IGESPAR carries out its work in direct cooperation with the decentralised departments of the Ministry of Culture (the Regional Culture Directorates), and has an important group of monuments under its tutelage: the Monasteries at Alcobaça and Batalha, the Convent of Christ in Tomar, the Jerónimos Monastery and Tower of Belém in Lisbon, all of which are recognised UNESCO World Heritage sites, and also the National Pantheon in Lisbon.
